Types of Amputation Surgeries
Sometimes injuries or infections are so severe that amputating a limb, finger or toe may be the only option. Amputation surgeries generally fall into two main categories - minor amputations and major amputations.
In minor amputations, only a digit or part of the foot is removed in procedures known as ray amputations and forefoot amputations. Amputation victims typically regain normal functioning within one to three months after the surgery.
In major amputations, the leg may be amputated below the knee or an entire limb may have to be removed. A surgeon will plan accordingly, attempting to leave a patient with as much functionality as possible after an amputation surgery.
Amputation Surgeries involving the leg and foot can include:
- Partial foot amputation: Chopart, Lisfranc, Ray
- Ankle disarticulation: Syme, Pirogoff
- Below-knee amputation: transtibial
- Knee-bearing amputation: knee disarticulation
- Above knee amputation: transfemoral
- Van-ness rotation/rotationplasty
- Hip disarticulation
- Hemipelvectomy/hindquarter amputation
Amputation Surgeries involving the arm can include:
- Amputation of digits
- Metacarpal amputation
- Wrist disarticulation
- Forearm amputation: transradial
- Elbow disarticulation
- Above-elbow amputation: transhumeral
- Shoulder disarticulation/forequarter amputation
